Here's a few memory's. The Jewish Chronicle article and pictures of the Fish Braai from previous years...
What you missed if you weren't at the Fish Braai in 2008?
It could be said that two great events took place in the year 2000 - the advent of the new millenium, which was heralded in with much excitement and funfair... and the birth of Julia's Fish Braai, the forerunner of many more to come.
Not only did it generate much needed funds, but of equal importance was the great exposure it created. It made people aware of the significance of the work being done for the mentally handicapped in the suburb of Heathfield, and it also brought people to the home who had never visited prior to that date.
From humble beginnings the fish braai developed into one of the major social events of the year and took on a new dimension, becoming associated not only with good food but also with good company and deeds of loving kindness. So many people contributed both in time, labour and provisions to make the 2007 braai and event, which will long be remembered.
The Cape Town community bonded and became one big family, giving their full-hearted support, with a capacity crowd of 500. Unfortunately, owing to insufficient seating capacity, many people were disappointed in being unable to be accommodated.
Success begets success and this without doubt was Julia's finest hour. But then nothing less is expected of her, as talent and commitment obviously runs in her family. Her late mother, Rose, was a great fund-raiser even before Julia was born, and contributed much to the welfare of the Cape Town community.
The raffles were many and really fantastic. The air tickets to Argentina were won by Darryl Fine, who generously donated them back to be auctioned. What a wonderful gesture!
There are numerous people to be thanked but it is is impossible to do so in this limited space. However, mention must be made of Selwyn Schiff, Bernard Zive, Larry Sherman, Maureen Summerfield and all the volunteers, especially the youth, who so readily came forward to assist. Let us also remember Joey Burke, auctioneer cum entertainer - what a performance! And, of course, Selwyn Solomon, who directed this flawless show to perfection. Lastly, there were the gourmet braaiers, who once again excelled themselves and helped make this day so very special.
The money raised from the fish braai will be deposited into the newly established medical trust fund in order to provide better medical care for indigent residents.
See you all in 2009, same place, same month!
